The Avène spring rises in Avène-les-Bains, in the Hérault, inside the Haut-Languedoc regional park. The first thermal pool was built there in 1743, and the medical faculty of Montpellier recognised the properties of the water in 1772.
The Pierre Fabre group acquired the thermal spa in 1975. The Eau Thermale Avène skincare brand was created in 1990 for sensitive and reactive skin. Tolérance Extrême followed in 1996 and Cicalfate in 2001.
