Bioderma was founded in 1977 by Jean-Noël Thorel, a pharmacist and biologist who created it in Lyon. The group is now based in Aix-en-Provence. In June 2018, Thorel and Céline Nebout endowed the Jean-Noël Thorel Foundation with the company, so that it is owned by a foundation and not by shareholders. The brand develops its products around the skin's own biology and tolerance.
Its best-known products are the Créaline micellar water, sold internationally as Sensibio H2O, and the Atoderm range for dry skin.
